Lately, I’ve been helping a friend come to terms that sometimes things just don’t work out no matter how you gave it your all. It’s entirely not your fault, it just happens. It hurts, definitely but eventually it will go away. And depends on how you take it, it can make you a better, happier person.

Watching Sunshine Montano’s Good times with Mo podcast guesting and watching her saying it aloud that for 13 years she has endured all the extra curricular relationships of her husband with different women, she finally came to terms that she’s not the one that can me him happy or feel contented. That must have hurt, the process leading up that moment. But when you see her say those words without pain or regret, you know she’s a stronger, happier woman now.

What I’m saying is, no matter how we try to protect ourselves from being hurt, we need it. We need it to be a better individual. To be stronger. To be wiser. I guess everyone knows this. We need people that makes us feel shit, the kind that drill a big empty hole in our hearts, those that make us cry a river, those that make us go mad and insane. We need them. We should learn to forgive them. And then thank them for being part of the processes of making us a better man.

And if people decide to leave, if you decide to leave there’s no better way of doing but doing it and by learning to live with it and move on.

My prayer for tonight.

I pray for strength. Strength to love. To love those who continuously hurt me with their judgement and with their negativeness. I pray for forgiveness. Actually the strength to forgive myself, the strength to ask forgiveness to those who I have hurt because I was hurting. To be mad, mad with passion for what I do and for the people I love. To be understanding towards others. For appreciation. Appreciation for those surrounding me, for those protecting me in their own ways. For those defending me from my unseen enemies. Appreciation towards life. for a new day to be great and to be someone for others. To be grateful for the blessings and even with the trials that I’m going through right now. Both of these will make me a better person than I am today. For peace. for it to take over me and for it to protect me from a part of me that wants to destroy me. For control. not towards others but for myself, that I may say No to things that I know wouldn’t be good for me. For love. For love to take over. For love to fill me so I will no longer feel the void within me.

Payday is always the day when I get to try new restaurants around the Metro. With a handful of new restaurants and eats to try, I already have a checklist of which to try first based on the tweets, instagram photos and facebook testimonials of foodie friends. And after weeks of hearing how good the tacos are in La Lagrima Taqueria, I texted by favorite dinner partner Jorine for some Mexican dindin.

La Lagrima is located in Banilad, right before you turn right to Eldorado Subdivision. The building is under the Banilad-AS Fortuna flyover and steps from Banilad Town Centre (BTC.). There was no fancy signage, just a tarpaulin that says the name of the restaurant. Interiors were straight and simple, walls were decorated with posters that serve as their menu. The Mexican (I assumed because of his foreign language) owner manned the register and had a lady assistant that helped served the meals. The place was nothing fancy.

I went in with high expectations, especially that everyone boasted how authentic and delicious their food is. Jorine ordered their fries with cheese sauce and cheese quesadilla. I got the Super Burrito, which had everything in it and their regular taco. I got the marinade pork for my burrito and told the owner to surprise me with the taco meat. I think he placed chicken.

The fries were good for 2 people, they used cheddar cheese as topping but placed too many and some the fries got a bit soggy. The quesadilla with toasted perfectly. It was crisp and not burnt. Based form the texture and the taste, I think they used Mozarella cheese.

My super burrito had rice, refried beans, marinated pork, cilantro, onions, sour cream, cheese – the works! And so I was expecting a party in my mouth, unfortunately it was a kind of the party that needed more zing! Tried smothering it with their yellow sauce (I don’t know what it is called but its spicy, had a mustard color and it kind of resembles the consistency of sour cream) and the green sauce which I think is a green kind of Tabasco sauce. But no amount of these condiments made me really enjoy my burrito (in the first place, a burrito should be flavorful even without the help of condiments). I had to ask additional sour cream (additional Php 20.00). The taco was a saving grace; I enjoyed it maybe because it had a generous serving of onion and tomato (I love both when combined). But in all fairness I think their tortilla is one of the best tasting, if not the best I’ve had in Cebu.

Home made sauces. Green (Jalapenos) for mild and Yellow for extreme

Other food in the menu is Flautas, Nachos, Chille Rellenos, to name a few. Another unique selling point is the different types of meat, and by types I mean the way the meat was cooked and or seasoned, to be used in your food. I’ve heard that they even have the option of Lengua.

During my visit, there were two other couples that went after us but didn’t stay more than 10 minutes after they got their order. I think I’d blame the uncomfy tables and chairs for that.

Now since I’ve never really been to Mexico, I wouldn’t know what authentic is, but compared to that of Army Navy or Maya (my favorite, and for me the best Mexican restaurant in Cebu), La Lagrima felt short of expectation. Maybe, if a friend would treat me out to dinner at La Lagrima, I would want to give it another try but I don’t think it’s a place where I would want to spend my moolah on.

Singapore has been stung by Philippines’ happy bee as it declares Jolibee’s Chicken Joy as the best tasting friend chicken in the country.

According to this article, the famous crispylicios, juicylicious Chicken Joy won over international brands Popeyes, Texas, 4 Fingers and KFC as having the best tasting friend chicken.

What’s even more crazier was that KFC didn’t get any vote from the taste-testers. Looks like KFC’s finger lickin’ good friend chicken recipe didn’t get any lovin’ from the judges.

I was not assigned to travel anywhere for work this holy week, so I took advantage of the long vacation to go back to the place close to my heart. It was also a good timing to go to the island because I wanted to leave an emotional baggage behind, and like what I always do, I escape to the beautiful beach of Sta. Fe and leave all my worries behind going back to the city renewed and emotionally rejuvenated.

Every time I’m in Bantayan I travel with different set of friends, this year I’m going with Blanchers, Dodot, Ezra and Nats.

We didn’t have concrete plans, no place to stay (almost every resort are either fully booked or overly expensive), we were going as we went along.

Last trip to Hagnaya Port on a Good Friday. I’m in front of Dodot and Blanchers doing my own thing.

We found a house that offered a room for Php 3,000.00 a night that was good for 6 people, although it was out of our budget, we didn’t mind the extra money we paid as long as we get a place where our items are safe and our own bathroom to use. Our hosts were very generous to lend us a few of their utensils and gave us cold water for free. I forgot the name of the place but it was right across YAD’s Barbeque place. You need to do a 5-10 minute walk or ride a pedicab to get to the beach. The place also offers Free Wifi.

Most of the time I was on my mobile phone trying to update the social media pages of the company and exchanging emails to check on an area. (See evidence in the photo above) My globe 3G was going bonkers during that time and with the limited facebook page manager activities I can do with my blackberry, I was lucky enough to have blanch lend me her phone and Ezra’s pocket wifi.

I guess even on vacation, work had to find me. An event we sponsored since last year held its last leg in Bantayan and I was invited to hand the awards to the major winners of the Cebu <3 Tri-Team Championships. In the photo are the over all champs, Team Parklane.

We had to retire early that night. The whole island was quiet because it was a good Friday, and maybe because we all got tired from the 5 hour trip to Bantayan. I had to share a bed with the Blanchers and Dodot. This is us, the pretty but fat kids struggling to fit in the instagram frame. LOL.

The next day we out and about. I had to prepare my beach essentials - Aquazorb oversize towel, Forever 21 sunnies and a maximum protection sunblock.

I adored my Aquazorb towel because it was very lightweight, I didn’t have problems storing it in my travel bag (I had to practice light traveling in time for my Palawan trip this May). Although sometimes it takes awhile for it to dry, even if I tried to air dry it, still it was very convenient.

We met up with a few of Dodot’s friends, had a drink and munched on the Chicharon that Dodot cooked for us.

While on the beach, Blanchers & Dodot found other friends who came and join us for the afternoon. Ramz and Jen.

While everyone else was having Lechon or seafood for Easter Sunday brunch, we had this. Tuna cooked in different ways, Tocino Buwad, Corned beef with pork n beans and vienna sausage.

To avoid the rush to the bus from Hagnaya port, we decide to take a long trike ride to Bogo bus terminal to wait for a bus going to Cebu. I think we were famished from all the traveling that we didn’t care where we were going to eat, we placed our bags,opened the left over food from brunch and ate while standing. That moment for me, was one of the best late lunch I ever had with all the bus fumes and road dirt. I was craving for pork barbeque the whole time I was in the island and couldn’t find anything else but chicken, chorizo or hotdog - finally I had pork barbeque at Bogo terminal.

Ended the trip with a nice massage.

The whole trip for me was about reflection, and I think I was able to accomplish that. It was for me to be with other people, a change of environment from the everyday stressful and sometimes toxic scene that I’m in.I was able to just lay by the beach, feel the sand in my toes, hear the waves crashing while watching the stars and breathing in sea breeze. I was still and calm.

Thanks to the Bantayan bunch who I had a wonderful time with. Sorry for the OC-ness when it comes to overnight unwashed dishes.

The inner chismosa in me was intrigued when Marco Polo Plaza Cebu posted teasers online about its next Cafe Marco Culinary Journey. For years it has always been featuring dishes from countries around the world, but this time the public was titillated with red silhouettes. So my question turned from What’s cooking in Cafe Marco’s kitchen? to Who’s cooking up a storm in Cafe Marco’s kitchen?

The big reveal happened last night, when 8 (counting the iluvcebu.com bros as one) media personalities walked down the grand staircase of the Marco Polo Plaza Cebu lobby presenting their personal and family recipes to the diners of Cafe Marco.

The concept was brilliant! An interesting way of Introducing the other side of these media personalities whom the Cebuano community are already familiar with. You’ve heard of the saying “You are what you eat”, but for me, it is the kind of meal that you serve others that really says something about you.

The personalities that were featured in the first every Culinary Journey: The Great Media Cookout are Ms. Ann Marie Tan GMA Cebu’s station manager, Ms. Honey Jarque-Loop lifestyle writer of The Philippines Star and The Freeman, Dr. Nestor Alonzo Cebu’s respected food writer of The Freeman, Award Winning Photojournalist Mr. Tonee Despojo, Sunstar Weekend editor Noel Villaflor, The good looking brothers of the Cebu blogosphere and owners of Iluvcebu.com Doy, Raymond and Edd Buenaviaje, and last but not the least, restaurant & bar owner, host extraordinaire and the most familiar bald guy in Cebu’s longest running community channel on cable TV, his royal hotness Alexis Yap.

Every personality was invited to share their personal recipes with the guidance of Cafe Marco’s culinary consultant Ms. Jessica Avila. All of them prepared 2-3 dishes which are alternatively served during the 10-day run of this event. By the way, Culinary Journey: The Great Media Cookout will only be from April 12 -21, 2013. Lunch and Dinner.

Now on to the food tasting (and for you my dear readers food-porning, if there is such a word).

Alexis prepared Fish Kinilaw and Mango float, which I did not expect. I was thinking he’d be coming up with dishes that are heavy on meat and sauces knowing from our past food trips how he’s such a red meat lover.

What is expected through is how his simple dishes turned out to be a star, just like him. I had two rounds of his Kinilaw (and because I just love anything kinilaw) but unfortunately was not able to taste his amazing Mango Float because it got sold out.

Dr. Nestor’s Jade Prawn was the talk of the night (at least in our table), they only served around 50 pieces and it got wiped out only minutes after it was available for taking. One of the diners said it was divine and a Cafe Marco insider shared how the chef’s had a difficulty in perfecting the dish and its presentation. It had bread crumbs, prawns and green pea puree that worked perfectly together.

I had the chance to taste his Beef in Perpetual sauce, took the last piece of it. The sauce was delectable but the beef was so-so.

Ms. Ann Marie’s Humba with Egg was the ultimate comfort food. The kind that warms the soul and takes you back to the time when you didn’t care about calorie counting. The sauce was semi-sweet and had a interesting play with the saltiness of the soy sauce. The meat was perfectly tender, and the pork fat, oohh the pork fat was just too hard to resist. Extra rice please!

Sir Tonee’s Grilled Boneless Bangus contained ingredients and a marinade that was easy to find and prepare yet the taste proved otherwise. A humble. healthy, yet flavorful dish.

Ms. Honey Jarque prepared a dish that was reflective of her Spanish roots. The Pollo Ala Chilindron had the basic characteristics of a Spanish dish - tomato sauce, olives, peppers and other hot spices. What I like about her dish is that with all the “complicated” flavors brought in by the different spices, no ingredient over powered the other. The chicken was still the star and it was well complimented by the superb taste of the sauce.

The Sisig with Kesong puti by Noel Villaflor was the least of my favorite, just because I prefer my sisig to be crispy and spicy. His sisig reminded me the the recipe where they top it off with mayonnaise which gives the dish a slimy feel when eaten. Maybe it melted, but I didn’t taste the Kesong Puti.

The Buenaviaje brothers are not only blessed with attractive genes but also with power to whip up a really good fusion dish, a testament to this is their Crispy Pata with Kare-Kare. Their version of a deconstructed Kare-Kare is part of my swak list of the night. .

The Crispy Pata was flavorful and the Kare-Kare sauce was just amazeballs - no need of bagoong. I think I remember Edd telling me to take the skin part because it will go perfectly with the sauce. Boy he was right. I was hooked. The meal was so sinful yet comforting at the same time.

A friend is competing for one of the BB. Pilipinas crown tonight, and I hope she makes it to the very end. All of the girls are deserving but it would really be awesome if she’s able to snag a title because I know how hardworking yet grounded she is. She will make the country proud.

Brad, before you get all more popular, win or lose you know you are an amazing woman. I wish I was there to cheer you on (like what I promised) and watch you live as you wow the crowd and win the judges over. Can’t wait till we go back to our old ways of eating without ever thinking of the calories we will gain afterwards.

I take a break from blogging and I’m back posting sad songs.

How’s everyone? I’ve been busy.. with work. Not depressed, no time to think about that. In fact, the past few weeks have been a blessing and I’ve been productive, taking on bigger responsibilities and succeeding in almost all my projects.

i heard this on the radio earlier today, and thought what a really sad, heart breaking song. But on the other hand, coming to terms with the truth, whatever it is, is a form of freedom. A blessing that it is a step to accepting things as what they really are. You can only hide or keep something, especially raging emotions for too long. Like when you’re not over someone. When you are not left with any other choice but to let it go and to move on because it seems like everyone has. Time does heal all wounds, and only your heart will know when you are truly ready to let the scars no longer bother you anymore.

But moving on the last doesn’t mean you’re weak. It means you were brave enough to give it your all, unfortunately it didn’t work. Life is unfair. Shit happens. You shouldn’t be bitter about it. For one thing, it brought you a place where you know you should be at. Face it. Mourn about it. Go mental. Be desperate. Let your friends nag you about things you shouldn’t be doing. I think these instances are normal. After all, It is never easy to let go of something that you’ve worked hard to keep working.

The good thing is that at the end of the day, you’ll know those who were patient enough to support and guide you while you’re mind is out of control, when your feelings are insane are the ones worth keeping. Then you start to be grateful and blessed. From that, a change can spark.

At the end of the day, no matter how a chapter of your life seems to take too long to turn around, it will eventually. Everything is temporary. Always remember, this too shall pass.

What's good in Gugu Chicken?

I never thought Koreans had an awesome fried chicken recipe. Aside from their KPop music and fashion, Korean cuisine has slowly taken its place in the hearts of Filipinos. Evidence to this is the popping out of Korean chicken places around the metro - Chosun, Chicken and Beer and now GuGu Chicken.

Gugu Chicken is located in Panagdait Mabolo (same arcade with Pan De Manila and Kusina Uno) and a 10 minute drive from Ayala and SM City Cebu.

It’s not that hard to miss since the signage is big and well lighted. (My bad, I was not able to take a photo of the facade because it was raining and nothing is available online)

Gugu Chicken serves authentic Korean fried chicken together with other Korean popular dishes (no samgyeopsal here though).

The place looks like all the other Korean themed cafes that are quaint and with playful cute interiors and drawings on the wall.

It houses 5 tables that can accommodate around 20 people. So make sure to do advance reservations if you’re bringing your whole barkada.

They have limited items on their menu, most of them variants of their fried chicken. For a whole chicken price range is around Php 600-750, half is from Php 300- 350 depending on what type of chicken variant. I got the half chicken with half hot & spicy and original.

Because I was dining alone, I had apprehensions in what to order. I wanted to try out everything but the price range was too much for somebody who was dining alone. They had combo meals but it was not that enticing.

Gugu Chicken serves pickled cabbage and white raddish as appetizers for free. I love anything pickled, so I enjoyed the free treat especially when I paired it with my chicken and pipping hot white rice.

A half order of chicken is about 10-12 pieces of bite size chicken nuggets. They don’t serve chicken with bones.

The original Gugu Chicken was fried to perfection and had a soy marinade. The sweet & spicy Gugu Chicken was drizzled with a thick sweet & chili sauce and then topped with sliced pistachios.

I wanted to try out their Gugu Rice but it was too expensive, maybe some other time. Drinks ranged from Php 50 (canned sodas) to Php 100+ for alcoholic beverages. They also serve soju.

The verdict? 9/10. Chicken was tender and perfectly fried. The sauce did not over power the chicken. I like how they served complimentary appetizers that went well with the chicken. The place was not packed when I went there, so I didn’t wait that long for my food to be served.

My year started full. Aside from being super dooper busy with Sinulog, good friends who are now working outside the country are back to get married and go on vacation. And although I did not spend Sinulog at the streets getting drenched with all sorts of liquor and poster paint, I went out non-stop weeks after that.

The minute you walk by the door, everyone at the counter will all together greet you with a “Good Evening Ma’am/Sir, welcome to Watever” together with their signature Whatever hand gesture.

Whatever Family KTV is the new karaoke place in town, where private rooms and state of the art karaoke machines are available for guests to enjoy. At Php 88.00 per hour, you can stage your concert and unleash your inner rockstar.

I was invited to the media launch of the place but because I was too lazy to get up that Saturday afternoon so I had to pass. But the good thing is that I get to visit the place and write this blog without bias.

Whatever Family KTV is conveniently located in Ridges in Panagdait, Mabolo. If you don’t know where to find it, tell the driver it is right beside Sykes. The place is 10 minutes away from Ayala Center Cebu and can be accessed via PUJ route 01A.

The Amenities

I’m not sure about how many rooms they have in total but I’m guessing that they have about 10 medium sized rooms that could comfortably fit 15-20 persons. The leather couches are comfortable to sit in and there are 2 low tables for you to place your valuables or food/drinks in.

The place opened last month so practically everything works fine from the A/C to the karaoke system. The songs are updated and easy to navigate via the TV screen or using the song book. They even have songs where a background vocal will sing the song for you once the machine detects that you are not using the microphone (pretty cool, discovered it on my third visit). The disco lights also syncs with the beat of the song you are singing.

A creative and entertaining detail to this place are the conspicuous room names like “I Don’t Know”, “Whenever”, “Where ever” etc. I thought it was clever. During my first visit, I asked the staff where our room was and he answered “I Don’t Know”, I found it a bit rude but later on found it funny when we all saw that the room’s name was actually “I don’t know”.

Aside from the awesome amenities, I like that they provide a power socket for customers to use in case they need to charge their gadgets. The other portion of the socket is on fine upgrades, the company that introduces USB power outlets.

Food and Drinks

The last two times that I went there, some of the items on the menu were not available (and to be honest, that kinda sucks) but forgivable considering that they just opened. Pulutan and finger food were available on their menu, I only got to try their chicken skin and it wasn’t that bad. The prices are pretty decent ranging from Php 100 - Php 200 per dish, while drinks are well around Php 35 per bottle . They serve their beer below zero.

And I’m guessing they have the same owners, they also allow food orders from Big Flat Bread. They will charge a corkage free if you bring in your own food.

Customer Service

Generally the staff is friendly and not sloppy, but there were a few times when I felt like they were too aggressive especially when it happened several times that they served the bill without even asking us if we wanted to get the bill. In one of my visits I ordered for bottomless Iced Tea and when they served me my third glass, one of the waiters told me that it was going to be the last serving because they ran out of iced tea in the pitcher. But all in all, they were very attentive and courteous.
