Wandering Barefoot: Food & Tales
  1. General Luna: Different Corners

I never thought that I’d be acting like a groupie until I discovered General Luna two years ago. For those who don’t know who they are, you’re probably living under a rock for the past years. General Luna is an all female rock band… everything else can be googled.

It’s hard to grab a copy of General Luna’s album here in Cebu (I don’t know in other areas though) luckily I had a friend who gave me a copy for FREE! YEY! =D

I immediately popped the CD into my laptop and listened to all their songs from start to finish.

When they released their first single from the album (before the actual album came out), it was not an instant hit to me. Maybe because I’m still not over the RED HEAVEN song from the first album which blew me off my socks. As I listened to every song, I realized that the song, different corners was the perfect single to describe what the new album offers.

Eventually, the song grew into me and I’ve learned to like it. There were 2 songs in the album that i absolutely loved - Watcher and Arms. I’ve been putting it on loop. In one of the articles published before the album came out, one of their members said that one of the songs had a trip hop feel to it (I LOVE LOVE LOVE TRIP HOP), it was something that I was looking forward listening to. I assume that song was either watcher or Arms.

If I were to describe the whole album from the cover to its songs it would be sophisticated and soulful. The album design, the way it was being laid out, the photos of the girls, you’d know it was something well thought of. Reading the lyrics and listening to the melody of the songs you’d get that feeling that it was written and arranged with deep emotions involved. In short, you’ll get to feel a bit of the heart and soul of the band.

If you’re expecting head banging and loud music, you wouldn’t find it in the album except for the occasional note belting of Nicole (the lead vocals) and Caren’s (Guitarist) rifts.

If you’re a fan of Alanis Morisette kind of songs then you’d dig General Luna’s Different Corner album.

General did two covers in this album - Dianne Warren’s “If This Day Was the Last Day” and Seal’s “Kiss from a Rose”. I like their version of Warren’s song but the “Kiss from the Rose” cover fell short for me.

They also collaborated with several artists in a few of their songs, evident in the song “Arms”, where you’d hear Nicole singing in duet with a male vocal. You’d also hear a few other instruments like the violin in some songs (reminds me so much of silent sanctuary).

The second album’s goal is to find the place of the band and their music in the contemporary Pinoy Rock scene. Would they succeed? You’re guess is as good as mine.

For the price of Php 350.00, the album is a worthy purchase. I hate it when I’m forced to buy a whole album with only one or two songs that is worth it. And although you can purchase their songs off itunes (at least you get to download only the songs that you like), the actual album itself is an interesting keep because of the really pretty close-up photos of Bea and Audry.

Looking forward to watching the band live again, watching them takes me to a different dimension. They’re just soo awesome to watch.

They will be launching their album on September 14, 2012 with details to follow. Make sure to visit and like the General Luna Facebook page HERE or you can visit their official website www.generalluna.com for gig schedules and other info about the band and their albums.
